Interview with MEP Marian Harkin and Dr James J. Browne

Global Youth Forum’s opening ceremony featured speeches from distinguished guests such as Ms. Marian Harkin, member of European Parliament, and the president of our host National University of Ireland Galway Dr. James Brown.
Marian Harkin is an Irish politician and is a member of European Parliament's Alliance of Liberals and Democrats for Europe (ALDE) for the North-West constituency, which comprises 85 MEPs from 19 member states.Harkin is a member of the European Parliament's Committee on Employment and Social Affairs and the delegation for relations with the United States. She has been European Democratic Party Vice-President since December 2012. At the Forum’s Opening Ceremony ms. Harkin spoke of the importance of debate skills, of Digital freedoms to active citizens, and of the value of volunteering programmes in the society. Our media team interviewed Ms. Harkin about her definition of democracy, the process of incentivisation of Europeans she has been working on and her “must visit” places in Galway.

Dr James J. Browne, President of NUI Galway is an engineering graduate of NUI Galway. Dr James J. Brownee is a former Dean of Engineering (1996-2001) and has served as Registrar and Deputy-President of the University from 2001 - 2008. He has a record of achievement in academic leadership, strategic planning and change management within NUI Galway. Dr Browne has published over 200 academic papers and 15 books, including translations into French and Chinese. He was awarded the degree of DSc by the University of Manchester for published work in 1990, is a member of the Royal Irish Academy and the Irish Academy of Engineering. Dr James J. Browne, President of NUI Galway welcomed all participants to NUI Galway and spoke about the importance of the Literary and Debating Society in the life of the University. The media team interviewed Dr. Browne about the process of motivating students to become active citizens and his university development vision.
